Review: Liz Lawson delivers a stellar murder mystery.
The novel follows struggling journalist Harriet Baker returning home to Logan Island (A New Jersey beach town) with ocean views on mansion porches. When Harriet’s birthday ends in a dead body–everyone becomes a suspect. Sara Allbright is the main suspect– the sister of Harriet’s high school rebound hookup Nic Allbright. Harriet knows her town is filled with corrupt cops and a justice system run by profit–so she reluctantly teams up with Nic to help redeem Sara and find out the truth.

Harriet is hilarious and headstrong–she’s direct and blunt whereas Nic is a grounded energy. Nic is loyal with biceps and tattoos! The spice was mild which felt natural for the pacing! The chemistry between the two characters is an instant spark making it a rom-com full of banter. The writing is effortless and can be finished quickly but I enjoy marinating in a good mystery like this!

My least favorite character (besides George) was Mindy just because I shipped Harriet and Nic instantly– I said “WHO IS SHE?” Just like Harriet. Her emotions were so relatable!

The novel is plot and dialogue driven with aesthetics of coastline views and women who drink bourbon while writing. Gentrification is a main theme in this novel which showcases the lengths wealthy people go to for profit and high status. Another theme it covers is aging grandparents with dementia which definitely hit close to home for me. It’s a lovely rom-com with a slice of crime on the beach!
