The Sweet Story of “Wonka” Film Review

Timothée Chalamet is on a hot streak starring in a confetti of roles with films like the Dune franchise, Bones and All, and The King. However, Chalamet’s portrayal of Willy Wonka has done something his other roles haven’t yet––He’s reached the hearts of all ages with his charming characterization of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka.

When I first heard there was production for the the film “Wonka” starring Timothée Chalamet, I was in complete confidence of casting director Paul King’s choice. The film grossed over $600 million dollars globally and is now streaming on the platform “MAX” (formally known as “HBO MAX”) Click here to stream now!

Timothée Chalamet as Willy Wonka in Wonka 2023

The film follows young Willy Wonka as he grasps to make a brand for himself as a chocolatier candy man. He charms the town with his edible magic tricks in order to achieve his dream of owning his own chocolate factory. There are two main antagonists that challenge Wonka’s rise to sweet fame, Mrs. Scrubbit, a motel manager played by (Olivia Colman) and the infamous rival “Slugworth” played by (Paterson Joseph).

When Willy Wonka tries to find a night’s rest at a motel for the night, he gets kidnapped and indebted to the sour Mrs. Scrubbit. She binds him into a surplus of debt owed resulting from a motel-stay with way too many fees hidden within the fine print. He is coerced into being a maid for the Scrubbit’s Motel and along the way develops friendships with the other indebted tenants. This creates barriers for Wonka as he is trying to raise money now to relieve himself from his debt while also trying to open his own chocolate shop.

“Slugworth” played by (Paterson Joseph) is the leader of a chocolate cartel. He manages and works with the other fellow candymakers in 1930’s London where chocolate was reserved for the rich and seen as a delicacy.
