How To Train Your Dragon 2025 Film Review

Movie Rating: 5/5 Stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I went into this film without any prior knowledge of the original animated movies. Let me tell you—this movie has my heart. The live action How to Train your Dragon starring Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid was amazing! It was heartwarming!

Themes: Compassion, Authenticity, Empathy & Humanity.

Mason Thames’s portrayed a heroic and inspiring character for all men as Hiccup. His character arc made me emotional because its something all queer men or “othered men” can resonate with. It follows a young man named Hiccup. He is raised by burly big vikings with beards. I loved that! Hiccup doesn’t fit in he’s scrawny and beardless. He’s more smart and technical compared to the rugged vikings who are more stubborn and hunter trained. He’s empathetic and intuitive but he doesn’t acknowledge that since it’s not values encouraged in his community.

Mason Thames as Hiccup

He’s determined to take after their trade of being a dragon hunter. Until he realizes he’s more keen on being a dragon rider when he makes a friendly dragon and names Toothless.

Toothless is so cute and innocent! You’re always rooting for him throughout the movie! Also, he spits purple fire! How amazing is that?!

For my fellow Wicked fans, it was a delightful surprise to see Bronwyn James playing the character of Ruffnut. She became one of Hiccup’s allies in the war against stopping the eradication against dragons.

Nico Parker as Astrid

When I tell you that Nico Parker and Mason Thames were a match made in heaven! Their chemistry was igniting and romantic. I already favor Parker’s portrayal of Astrid so much. I’m unsure if I’d even like the original blonde characterization of Astrid. I loved Nico Parker’s character so much! Her appearance is exactly how I’d imagine Violet Sorringale. It’s what I envision in the film adaption of a future Fourth Wing movie.

Take notes other film studios! This is how live actions are done. It was cinematic, adventurous, and heartfelt. Congratulations to the entire cast on bringing this artistic adaption to life.

The primary theme was the main character Hiccup learning to accept himself. Instead of being a big musty viking he becomes a walking encyclopedia and wise man on how to train your dragon.
